Jhana Bach's Mission to Chennai
My mission is to raise funds for a volunteering trip to India in January, 2008. I will be working with orphans in Chennai, southern India for three weeks through the U.S. nonprofit Experiential Learning International. I need to raise about $3500 to cover the costs of the program, visas, airfare, medical insurance, and other expenses.
Children who grow up on the street in India are vulnerable in ways we can’t imagine. They don’t have birth certificates, so they aren’t viewed as citizens and don’t have access to the basic human rights we take for granted. They are also subject to disease, exploitation, abuse, starvation, extremes of weather and violent criminals. I will work at Christ Faith Home, which cares for abandoned infants found in train stations, temples, hospitals, police stations, or on the street. Usually CFH houses 15-20 infants. Many of these children will be adopted, but in the meantime, they need care and attention. They arrive with a variety of health issues, from ear infections and rashes to physical trauma incurred through abuse or neglect. The house mothers who care for the babies do their best, but are unable to give the one-on-one attention that every child needs to develop and thrive. It only takes a little to help a lot!
